Atchison County is located in Kansas. The county seat is currently Atchison. In 2020, there were a total of 16,348 households.

It was formed in 1855.

It was named in honor of David Rice Atchison, a United States Senator from Missouri.

Atchison County comprises the Atchison, KS Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Kansas City-Overland Park-Kansas City, MO-KS Combined Statistical Area.

Atchison County Criminal Records

Atchison County records their criminal activity in the form of criminal records. These records cover murders, rapes, burglaries, arson, motor vehicle theft, assaults, and crimes of a sexual nature. All sex offenders in Atchison County are kept on an up-to-date register. These include anyone in Atchison County who is living, working, in prison, or attending school. All people are granted access to this list in Atchison County.

All citizens in Atchison County can search for sex offenders in their area. By using a tool, residents must simply enter their desired zip code, and it will then list all sex offenders found within a given radius in Atchison County. There is also an option to search for individual offenders by name. The searches also include any offender currently incarcerated or non-compliant.

Atchison County Public Records

Vital records are kept on every individual in Atchison County and across the state of Kansas. In fact, Atchison County, along with the other Kansas counties, is in control of collecting some of these documents and forwarding them to the state government. The vital records obtained in Atchison County can include but are not limited to birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, divorce documents, and more.

For example, the Atchison County clerk is responsible for obtaining all marriage records. Copies of each and every vital record are then sent to the Office of Vital Statistics. In the past, county clerks have also been responsible for gathering birth and death records. Each and every vital record in Kansas, including those from Atchison County, is held in one central registry. These records are kept safe in the central registry and can later be used together in statistical analysis.

Atchison County citizens can access and copy all vital public records thanks to the Kansas Open Records Act 1976. Any public records, state or local, can be accessed thanks to this act. Atchison County records do come at a cost, unfortunately. Birth records, death certificates, and marriage records first copies in Atchison County cost $15.

NOTE - There are a number of rules in Atchison County regarding obtaining records in-person. A requester must visit within opening hours from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. CST. In order to be granted a copy of a record, requesters must also be able to show some form of photo identification. Examples of an acceptable form of photo ID include a driver’s license or state ID. All Atchison County public record requests must also be put into writing.
