Johnson County Court Records
Per Rule 21 of the Kansas Supreme Court Rules, court records refer to all documents filed during a judicial proceeding. The Records Management Department is the custodian of court Records for Johnson County District Court. The District Court handled over 43,000 cases in 2022, and each case was handled in compliance with the Johnson County Local Court Rules. Access to court records helps to promote judicial transparency, so these records are treated as part of Johnson County Public Records unless otherwise determined by state law or judicial order.
Are Court Records Public in Johnson County?
Yes. The Kansas Open Records Act (K.S.A. 45-221) requires all record custodians to open court records for inspections. Therefore, anyone can view or obtain copies of court records from any court in Johnson County. However, sealed court records are not public. Other court records exempted from public disclosure include:

- Grand jury proceedings

What Do Johnson County Court Records Contain?
A Johnson County court record generally contains information about a case filed with the court. However, the case information may vary by case type. In most cases, a court record or file will contain the following information:
- Case numbers
- Judge's name
- Case status, nature, and caption
- Case party's full name
- Race, sex, and date of birth
- Attorneys names
- Probation officer
- Accounting (assessed type, assessed amount, amount paid, and balance)
- Calendar (court date and time, division, and proceeding time)
- Charges (count, section, date, title, finding, jail time, and probation)
Where to Conduct a Johnson County Case Lookup
Individuals can contact the Johnson County District Court for a court case lookup. Criminal and civil cases appealed from the district court can be retrieved at the Kansas Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.
How to Conduct a Johnson County Case Records Search
Public access to Johnson County case records is available online or through computers at the courthouse via a case number or name search. Interested persons can retrieve court records from 1980 till date. Searches on court records before 1980 will require a pre-payment of $12. Individuals can also retrieve case records through the following methods:
- Fax: The requester must fax a completed request form to (913) 715-3405 and a fax coversheet/payment slip.
- Mail: Send a completed request form with the appropriate fees to the Johnson County Clerk of the District Court. The fee can be paid via money order, cashier's check, a payment slip, or personal or firm check (a driver's license number and date of birth must be written on the check)
- In-person: Visit the Records Management Department from Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:45 pm. Interested persons can bring a completed request form to the office or fill one out in person. Payment is accepted by debit or credit card, personal or firm check, money order, or cash. A government-issued ID card would be required for debit or credit card and personal or firm check transactions.
All fax, mail, and in-person requesters must contact the Department for a price quote before submitting their requests. They can either call (913) 715-3480 or email DCC-records@jocogov.org to request price quotes. Printed copies of court records cost $.50 per page, and certified copies cost $1 per document. Payment by credit card attracts an additional $4.95 processing fee.
Generally, fax and mail requests take three business days to process. If it will take more than three business days to process, a notification on the estimated time frame for completion will be sent to the requester. In-person requests made before 4:45 pm (excluding archived or microfilmed cases or large requests) are usually processed the same day. However, requests after 4:45 pm will be processed the following business day.
Johnson County Civil Court Case Records
A civil court case record is a document filed or generated during civil case proceedings. Civil records are maintained by the Johnson County Civil Clerk in accordance with the Johnson County Civil Rules. Civil case records can be retrieved online, by fax at (913) 715-3401, by mail, or in person at the Clerk's Office. Online requests are free, but fax, mail, and in-person requests typically attract a small fee. In-person requests can be made from 8 am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday. Payments can be made by card, check, money order, or cash (in person only). Card transactions, whether by fax or in person, attract an additional $4.95 processing fee.
Johnson County Criminal Court Case Records
Criminal court records include the documents filed in a criminal case. All criminal cases are handled at the Criminal Division of the Court Clerk's Office in accordance with the Johnson County Criminal Rule. Record seekers can get criminal court case records online, fax at (913) 715-3461, by mail, or in person at the Clerk's office. Online requesters can conduct a search by case number or last name/business name. Then select the Criminal/Juvenile/Traffic option below the search area to get results for criminal cases only. Fax and mail requesters must send a record request form with the appropriate fees to the Criminal Division. In-person requests can be made on the 1st floor of the Johnson County Courthouse. The Criminal Division office opens from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
How to Get Court Records Online for Free
Per Rule 22 of the Kansas Supreme Court Rules, members of the public can view District court records online through the Public Access Portal. Individuals who want to get court records online for free at the Johnson County District Court must visit the Court's home page. Click the CONTINUE button and click the "CASE SEARCH" tool on the next page. Enter a case number or name in the search fields and click on any of the first two buttons beneath the search area.
