Criminal Records

The Central Record Division of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office serves as a repository for all records generated and managed by the office. Copies of police requests can be obtained in person at:

Submitted requests should include as much specific information as possible, including the date and time of the incident, the names of the persons involved, and a report number Accepted forms of payment include cash, checks and money orders made out to the “Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.”

In addition, the Sheriff’s office processes in-person requests for criminal records check. However, the criminal history checks offered by the office are restricted to only local records. Members of the public can obtain a more extensive criminal record check by contacting the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

How to Find Inmate and Jail Records

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office maintains records of inmates housed in detention centers and jails within the county. It provides online access to general inmate information via an inmate search tool. Interested parties can search for inmates currently in custody by entering their name (first and last). Johnson County Inmate Search results can also be filtered to reveal an inmate’s past booking and release information.

How to Find Sex Offender Information

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation maintains and provides public access to an online platform containing the details of registered sexual offenders residing in Johnson County and the rest of the state. Interested parties can search through public records by first and last name. Records can also be filtered to reveal offenders who have been convicted of drug or violent crimes.

Johnson County Court Records

Johnson County is home to a county district court and multiple municipal courts. The district court has general jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases, with specialized divisions for domestic relations, juvenile, civil and criminal cases. How to Find Divorce Records

Certified copies of a divorce decree can be obtained by contacting the clerk of the District Court at:

In addition, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment processes walk-in and mail requests for divorce certificates filed with the office from the 1st of July, 1951 to date. Unlike a divorce decree, which details the terms of a divorce settlement, a divorce certificate only contains basic information, such as the name of both parties, date of the divorce and more. The department charges $15 for each certified copy. Walk-in requests are typically processed on the same day while mail requests take 7 to 10 business days.

How to Find Birth and Death Records

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Vital Statistics for Johnson County manages records of births and deaths in the state. In compliance with state laws, birth and death records are not public records. Certified copies of these records are only issued to eligible persons, namely:

  • The individual on the record
  • Immediate family members such as a sibling, spouse or parent
  • A legal representative
  • Anyone with an established direct interest

The Office of Vital Statistics for Johnson County maintains marriage records for licenses issued from 1970 to date. Certified copies of a marriage certificate can only be issued to authorized persons such as the:

  • Persons named on the certificate
  • Immediate family members or parent named on the certificate
  • Legal representative
  • Anyone capable of proving a direct interest
