What Are Lyon County Arrest Records?

Lyon County arrest records are official documents containing information on the frequency of arrests made and arrest warrants issued in the county. The Lyon County Sheriff is the primary custodian responsible for fingerprinting and collecting information on persons who are taken into custody within its jurisdiction. The Sheriff maintains, updates, and forwards the record to the Kansas Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which stores statewide criminal information.

A Lyon County arrest record contains information such as the arrestee's bio-data, the alleged crime, circumstances surrounding the person's arrest, name of arresting officer, and warrants.

Note: While an arrest record may indicate suspected criminal involvement, it does not serve as definitive proof of the subject’s conviction. The suspect may be arrested mistakenly, released without charges, or charged and found not guilty.

Crime Statistics

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation 18.9 out of 1,000 residents in Lyon County experienced crime in 2019. The most recently published incident-based crime index report revealed that Lyon County law enforcement agencies recorded 628 total offenses, broken down into 52 (8%) violent crimes, and 576 (92%) property crimes. A breakdown of both property crimes showed that there were 475 thefts, 81 burglaries, 33 aggravated assaults/batteries, 20 MVTs, and 18 rapes. A further breakdown shows 412 theft cases, 65 burglary cases, 18 motor vehicle theft (MVT), and one arson case. The county also recorded 24 aggravated assaults/batteries, 20 rapes, and one robbery incident.

What Are Lyon County Criminal Records?

Lyon county criminal records are official documents containing information about code violations of persons who are residing within the county. A resident's criminal record or rap sheet summarizes the person's misdemeanors and felonious activity. It contains information including Lyon arrest records, criminal charges, acquittals, convictions, incarceration, and supervision. It also contains information such as date of birth, sex, fingerprints, physical description, and mugshots of the offender.

The information contained in a Lyon County criminal record is generated locally and maintained by the county courts, Sheriff, detention center, and police departments. However, these details are unified under the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which is the central repository of criminal information in the state. Lyon County criminal records are open and obtainable from both county and state repositories.

How Do I Get Lyon County Criminal Records?

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) maintains an updated database of criminal history and dispositions for counties in the state including Lyon County. Any individual, organization, or company can obtain criminal justice records (with exemptions) by making fingerprint or name-based background checks online or via mailed requests. Online purchase of records costs $20 and checks are name-based, while mailed applications are fingerprint-based for certified records on self or others.

For checks through the online database, individuals will have to register and initiate the check by providing the subject’s names and details like aliases, date of birth, sex, and social security number. Finalize the search by paying fees and submitting the request. Once the automation process is complete, requestors will receive notification of related search results or “no-results” for when there are no open records related to the information provided. Requestors should note that juvenile records, expunged arrest and conviction information, and non-conviction charges are not accessible through online requests.

For certified copies of records for official purposes, interested persons should fill and submit application forms with fingerprint cards obtained from the Sheriff’s Department or other approved fingerprinting sites to:

Kansas Bureau of Investigation
Attn: Central Repository
1620 SW Tyler,
Topeka, KS 66612-1837

The required information for name-based checks also applies to this request. Individuals may also send requests for their complete criminal history, including juvenile and arrest records by sending written requests through the same process. The accuracy of fingerprint checks is higher than online checks. Certifies Kansas fingerprint-based checks cost $45, while national checks cost $57.

Locally, individuals with the relevant subject or case information can also contact the county courts or Sheriff for criminal case files, police reports, and other criminal justice information.

Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
