Sedgwick County Criminal Records
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) conducts and provides criminal history record checks for all the counties in the state. It collates information from different police departments, sheriff’s offices, courts, and prosecutors into the Central Repository. Members of the public can request their own criminal history checks as well as request background checks for other people. They can request name-based and fingerprint-based record checks.
To perform a name-based check, visit the Criminal History Record Search portal on the website of the KBI. Requesters have to register and sign in with their Kansas.gov Subscriber Accounts to use this service. The fee for name-based criminal record checks is $20 per individual.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation accepts fingerprint-based record checks by mail. Individuals reviewing their own records and those requesting for certified record checks can also contact the KBI by mail. For a fingerprint-based check, obtain the subject’s fingerprints on a ten-print fingerprint card. Use the FD Form 28 fingerprint card designed by the FBI. This is available from local police departments and sheriff’s offices. Send the completed card, without folding or stapling it, in an envelope to:
Kansas Bureau of Investigation
Attn: Criminal History Records Section
1620 SW Tyler
Topeka, KS 66612-1837
You may also mail a request to this address to obtain a blank FBI fingerprint card. The Topeka KBI office also provides fingerprinting service between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday. It charges $10 for this service.
When requesting a personal criminal history record check, ask for an FD-353 form. You may substitute this with a regular FD 258 form if the FD-353 form is not available. Roll your fingerprints on this card and include an application letter alongside when requesting for a personal criminal history check. Send the mail request to the same KBI address above. The fee for a personal history check is $35.
To request a certified criminal history record, start by printing and completing a Certified Record Check Request form. Send this along with payment to the KBI address above. Include a completed fingerprint card when requesting a fingerprint-based record check. The KBI charges $30 for each name-based certified record check and $45 for each fingerprint-based certified record check.
